SOMALIA:Dozens fear dead as al-Shabaab overruns Puntland military base
Al-Shabab militant group carried a daring raid on a heavily fortified military camp in Af-Urur, bout 100KM from the northeastern town of Bosasso on Thursday morning, officials and militants said.
The raid started with a car bomb on the base as militant fighters then stormed the camp while most of the soldiers were sleeping, a local man told Media.
Puntland’s military chief Colonel Abdullahi Omar Anshur said the militants attacked the base and the Puntland military engaged heavy fighting.
“We have sent reinforcement to the base.” he said declining to comment if Al-Shabab fighters overran the base.
Al-Shabab’s military spokesman Abdiasis Abu Musab claimed his fighters took control of the base manned by the elite military force of Puntland locally known as “Darawishta”.
“We have killed more than 60 soldiers.” The militant spokesman claimed.
The attack comes as Puntland security forces struggled to tackle growing militants activities in the region. But Thursday’s raid was the biggest assault by Al-Shabab since Puntland security forces declared to have flashed out Al-Shabab militia from the mountainous Galgala area in Eastern region.
